all the christmas lights have lost their ends good thing it'll never be christmas again you'll lose all your deposits and you'll wonder where you got them from to begin with an opportunity is yours if you pay the right amount who's that? it's just big brother taggin' along to help you out any major corporation on an internet connection can foot the bill to be privy to your personal selection yes and once you turn 18 your future's not your own you just need to get a letter to steal you from your home the government will bait you: cash, college ed or cars and in return you get a one-way ticket to fight a war you didn't start oh, yes america is free free for everyone oh, say, can't you see? oh, yes america is free free for everyone america, you're killin' me just one big plantation full of seeds from sea to shining sea one big plot of liberty america, you're killin' me you gotta be old enough to drive you gotta be old enough to drink there should be an age for marajuana, i think cos the bouncers know that crowd "take the car, no one's around... ...but get that joint out of your mouth." and all the city workers get to take off every holiday wonder if they think of MLK while they're gettin' paid? and you and I work Saturdays just to fill our tank and then we get fired anyway, cos of company cutbacks no we can't smoke a joint no we can't get our checks and it's illegal to get married unless you're oppositely sexed let's let women marry women and men can marry men let's save the term "civil union" for what the USA shoulda been oh, yes america is free free for everyone oh, say, can't you see? oh, yes america is free free for everyone america, you're killin' me just one big plantation full of seeds from sea to shining sea one big plot of equality america, you're killin' me

why can't some things last longer than they should? i'll do whatever it takes for whomever can make it good but then it comes to me again the green grass grows on the wrong side of the fence and whenever i seem to make amends there's no one around who can appreciate it i used to think your letters mattered more but to me, or to you baby, now i'm not so sure cos i burned off all the edges and my heart got to the core you know, it's amazing how much beauty breathes when you give it a little more you left early that summer with a new place to go i could tell by the empty bulletin bulletin bulletin bulletin board's glow and it's lonely ya know but we woulda been yeah we woulda been each other's foe why do some things last longer than they should i'll do whatever it takes for whomever can make it good but then it comes to me again you grew up on the wrong side of the fence and whenever i seem to make amends you're always around to make me second guess it you left early that summer with a new place to go i could tell by the empty bulletin bulletin bulletin bulletin board's glow and it's lonely ya know but we woulda been yeah we woulda been each other's foe

oh, apple cider i wish you were harder i wish you packed a heavier punch with every calorie the vultures ask me 'are you having fun?' can't even tell you how many times i've said i just want you to be happy (and it's not what i meant) and i will never be pretty enough and i will never show your exes up and you will never be what i want but that don't mean we gotta stop people will never change although they'll be the first to say 'i did a 180 from where i was at' and i 'll say 'i knew you were gonna say that.' oh, apple cider wish you were harder make me forget what i don't know there is a game i play with possibilities and it's easy come, easy go there is no joint wide enough to dispel this great fallacy you were there in every photo but where'd you go when you'd leave?

we were baking a cake so strong that the aroma carried every one along they followed it down the dim streets jacked up on sugar and icy dreams but sometimes the taste can be too sweet and as you enjoy it it rots your teeth we were building a house so tall that the beams just glowed through every wall and as the sun set across the way the windows shined brighter with what nature wanted to say we were planting a seed so small that it was crazy to think anything would grow at all and as the water began to fall the leaves sprouted higher and higher and higher and higher and higher until the plant outgrew the pot that it grew from we were baking a cake we were baking a cake we were building a house we were planting a seed we were weaving a dream
